We shut the house down at the main, watch the meter for movement, and pressure-test the service line, so we know the loss is on the buried pipe and not a fixture, a hose bib, or something inside. Then we trace the line's actual path across the yard and narrow the failure to a section. Whatever we find, we show you.
With the line located, we walk you through the two real ways to replace it. A trenchless pull uses a small pit at each end and draws new pipe along the existing path, which usually spares the lawn, the driveway, and the mature trees sitting on top of it. An open trench is the honest answer when the route has to change, the old pipe is collapsed or obstructed, or the connections at the meter and the house need rebuilding. We tell you which one your yard actually calls for, and why. We don't jump to the expensive answer.
Then you get a written estimate covering the pipe, the connections, any permit your jurisdiction requires, and putting the ground back. That depends on your water provider, and it's worth one call to them before you spend anything. Generally the buried line running from the meter to the house is the property owner's to maintain, which is why a leak out in the yard can still be your repair. That stretch is the line we replace. Before we quote anything, we verify the water is being lost on your side of the meter and not upstream of it.
Shut off every fixture in the house and watch the water meter. If the dial or leak indicator keeps moving, water is escaping somewhere on your line.
